Environmental Grants

The Ontario government offers several funding programs in support of environmental projects that benefit the natural environment. The Ontario government offers the following federal and provincial grants.

Environmental Grant Qualifier

About the Program


The EcoAction Community Funding Program encourages action-focused projects that protect, rehabilitate or enhance the natural environment, and build the capacity of communities to sustain these activities into the future.  The program supports projects that address the following four themes:

  • clean air;
  • clean water,
  • climate change; and
  • nature.

Eligibility Criteria

Non-profit groups and organizations:

  • environmental groups;
  • community groups;
  • youth and seniors groups;
  • community-based associations;
  • service clubs; and
  • Aboriginal organizations.

About the Program


The ecoENERGY Innovation Initiative supports energy technology innovation to produce and use energy in a cleaner and more efficient way. The initiative is a key component of the Government of Canada’s actions to achieve real emissions reductions, while maintaining Canada’s economic advantage and its ability to create jobs for Canadians.

The initiative also explores long-term solutions for reducing and eliminating air pollutants from energy production and use.


Funding Limits

Activities funded include the following five strategic priority areas:

  • Energy Efficiency
  • Clean Electricity and Renewables
  • Bio-energy
  • Electrification of Transportation
  • Unconventional Oil and Gas

The initiative consists of two separate funding streams:

  • Research & Development projects
  • Demonstration projects

Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicants must be companies, industry/research associations, or academic institutions located in Canada with a project related to one of the five key areas.

About the Program


The Environmental Damages Fund (EDF) follows the “Polluter Pays Principle” to help ensure that those who cause damage to the environment take responsibility for their actions.

The EDF is a specified purpose account, administered by Environment Canada to provide a mechanism for directing funds received as a result of fines, court orders and voluntary payments to priority projects that will benefit our natural environment.

  • Non-governmental organizations
  • Universities and academic institutions
  • Aboriginal groups
  • Provinces, territories and municipalities

About the Program


The Great Lakes Sustainability Fund (GLSF) is a component of the Great Lakes Program’s Great Lakes Basin 2020 Action Plan that provides technical and financial support to projects that implement remedial actions to complete the clean up and restoration in three key priority areas:

  • fish and wildlife habitat rehabilitation and stewardship;
  • contaminated sediment assessment and remediation; and
  • innovative approaches to improve municipal wastewater effluent quality.

Funding Limits

  • Up to one-third of the total cost
  • Funding is variable and depends on the project

Eligibility Criteria

Eligible organizations include the following:

  • Federal government departments
  • Provincial ministries
  • Municipalities
  • Aboriginal organizations and communities
  • Conservation authorities
  • Environmental non-governmental organizations
  • Universities
  • Schools
  • Private industry

About the Program


The Science Horizons Youth Internship Program is a collaborative effort with Canadian universities, the private sector, non-governmental organizations and other eligible organizations that offers promising young scientists and postsecondary graduates hands-on experience working on environmental projects under the mentorship and coaching of experienced scientists and program managers.

 


Funding Limits

Ontario | Grants and Non-Repayable Contributions

  • Up to $12,000 per year

Eligibility Criteria

  • Not-for-profit organizations such as charitable and volunteer organizations, professional associations, and non-governmental organizations
  • Aboriginal organizations or associations
  • Postsecondary educational institutions
  • Local organizations such as community associations and groups, seniors and youth groups, and service clubs
  • For-profit organizations such as small businesses, companies, corporations and industry associations

About the Program

The Science and Technology Internship Program (STIP) provides natural science and engineering graduates the opportunity to gain relevant and meaningful work experiences within their field of studies. Graduates are able to acquire professional skills and practical work experiences to facilitate their transition to the labour market and to eventually find sustained employment.

Non-federal government organization (private company, university or college, non-profit organization and provincial or municipal government) can become a partner of Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) when it hires an eligible intern to work on research and development projects that are within the mandate of NRCan.
